Encaustic

Encaustic means to burn in.  In Egypt and later in Rome encaustic artists made portraits of faces on wood shapes wrapped and framed with cloth over the heads of mummies. The paint they used was pigment mixed in beeswax and heated to melting then applied with hot metal tools to the wood support.  This was the burning in method.
